Glossary
Applications (also referred to as portlets) – A plug-in component within Liferay that can be added to a Web page. Some examples are: Web Content, Blog, Calendar, etc. Applications can be arranged on a page using drag and drop.
Blog – A collaboration application that displays an archived set of notes from community owners/administrators with an ability for community members to add their comments.
Community – A Web page or set of Web pages on a particular topic. In Liferay, a community has a name, a description, one or more owners, and other attributes.
Control Panel - A feature in Liferay where a logged-in user can view general account information, such as: Screen name, e-mail address associated to his/her account, and the ability to add an image icon. The control panel also provides access to making Instant Communities. The control panel is accessed from the user's name in the upper right area of the screen, once the user is logged in.
Document Library – An application that displays structured folders and files that can be uploaded from one’s desktop. There is a limit of 3M per file filesize.
Layout - Layouts are applied to pages, and control how applications may be placed on the page.
Liferay – The open source enterprise portal used as the platform for Instant Communities.
Look and Feel
– At an application level, where one can turn on/off the application border, adjust margin and padding, and text styles.
–At a page level, where one can view the available themes and apply one to a Web page, as well as, apply a CSS to a page.
Manage Pages – A feature that allows a user with the appropriate rights to be able to: add/edit/delete page(s), apply CSS, apply a theme, and create a friendly URL to a page within that community.
Theme - This controls the overall format of the page. There is currently only one Instant Community theme.
Toggle Edit Controls – A feature for logged-in users with the appropriate editing rights of a community to be able to turn on/off the top editing control icons of the applications on the Web page.
Web Content Display – An application that contains a built-in text editor to display HTML on a Web page after it is saved (which is stored in the Liferay Content Management System).
Wiki – A collaboration application that displays a structure of information, allowing users to have the ability to create and edit documents, as well as link to each other.
